The AR Program is geared towards students in grades 1-5.
This school year, Kindergarten students will begin the program, when they are developmentally ready, as an enrichment to their curriculum. Kindergarten students will not participate in the school-wide AR incentive program. The Kindergarten teacher will reward the students individually in class.

How parents can help:
- Make sure your child reads every day and sign his/her reading log (if the teacher uses one).
- Provide opportunities for your child to select books in his/her reading range from both the Pembroke Pines Charter FSU Elementary library media center, teachers classroom library, home collection, and the Public Library.
- Encourage your child to take quizzes on AR books on a regular basis.
- Help your child pace himself/herself toward meeting his/her AR goal for each quarter.
- PLEASE NOTE: In order to qualify for AR events and prizes, your child must meet two criterions: have a quiz average percent of 85% or higher AND meet 100% of their point goal.
- Monitor your child's progress using Renaissance Home Connect and discuss the progress with your child. Click on the apple to find great books!!
How the process works:
AR Clubs
We have different clubs for students that exceed their point and quiz goal above and beyond. So please, encourage your child to READ, READ, READ!
100% AR Club:
Students that have met their point goal and have a quiz average of 85% or better will receive a small prize and attend the AR Event for that quarter.
200% AR Principal's Club:
Students that have doubled their point goal and have a quiz average of 85% or better will receive a large prize, a Principal's Prize, and attend the AR Event for that quarter.
300% Plus AR Club:
These students have tripled, or more, their point goal and have a quiz average of 85% or better will recieve a large prize, Principal's Prize, attend the AR Event for that quarter, AND get an AR Medal!!
**Students who meet ALL 4 quarters this school year with an 85% or higher quiz average will be invited to the AR BIG BASH at the end of the school year!!
A Guide to Accelerated Reader Lingo
AR = Accelerated Reader
ATOS = a readability formula that estimates the reading difficulty levels of books and other texts. ATOS uses four factors to determine the readability of a text: average sentence length, average word length, vocabulary grade level, and the number of words in a book.
BL = Book Level - measures the difficulty of the text (this is NOT the same as grade level)
IL = Interest Level - indicates the sophistication of the themes and concepts in the text
LG = Lower Grades interest level (approximately K - 3rd grade)
MG = Middle Grades interest level (approximately 4th - 8th grade)
MG+= Middle Grade Plus (approximately 6th - 9th grade)
UG = Upper Grades interest level (approximately 9th - 12th grade)
LS = Literacy Skills quiz - monitors student's growth in specific literacy and higher-order thinking skills
PTS = Points - based on the length (word count) and difficulty (book level) of the text; points are not a reflection of the book's literary value; the number of points earned is a measure of reading practice
RP = Reading Practice quiz - literal comprehension questions about a text
VP = Vocabulary Practice quiz - used for accelerating vocabulary growth and heightening student's interest in words
ZPD = Zone of Proximal Development (also called the Reading Range) - the ideal range of readability levels from which a student should select books to read; indicates the level of text a student can read with comprehension by providing the right balance of independence and challenge; reading within this range allows students to experience optimal growth; a student's ZPD is not necessarily equal to his/her grade level
- Students take the STAR Reading Diagnostic Test to determine their individual reading range. Throughout the year, this diagnostic test is given several times to update students' reading ranges and monitor progress.
- Each quarter, teachers set individual point goals for all students using the students' individual reading ranges as a basis & 20 minutes of daily reading.
- Students select a book within their reading range to read.
- Students take the Reading & Vocabulary Practice quiz for that book on a computer at school and answer literal comprehension & vocabulary questions about the book. Students are not allowed to look in the book for answers or take a quiz at home.
- Based on the number of questions answered correctly, students earn points and receive a score which is added into their average percent correct.
- Every student is striving to meet their individual goal by reaching their point goal with a quiz accuracy rate of 90 percent or higher.
